OBJECTIVE: The primary aim of the study was to compare two nutritional status evaluation tools: the Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA) and Nutritional Risk Screening (NRS-2002). Using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Core Questionnaire 30 (EORTC QLQ-C30), the second aim was to provide constructive advice regarding the quality of life of patients with malignancy. METHODS: This study enrolled 312 oncology patients and assessed their nutritional status and quality of life using the PG-SGA, NRS-2002, and EORTC QLQ-C30. RESULTS: The data indicate that 6% of the cancer patients were well nourished. The SGA-A had a higher sensitivity (93.73%) but a poorer specificity (2.30%) than the NRS-2002 (69.30% and 25.00%, respectively) after comparison with albumin. There was a low negative correlation and a high similarity between the PG-SGA and NRS-2002 for evaluating nutritional status, and there was a significant difference in the median PG-SGA scores for each of the SGA classifications (P < 0.001). The SGA-C group showed the highest PG-SGA scores and lowest body mass index. The majority of the target population received 2 points for each item in our 11-item questionnaire from the EORTC QLQ-C30. CONCLUSION: The data indicate that the PG-SGA is more useful and suitable for evaluating nutritional status than the NRS-2002. Additionally, early nutrition monitoring can prevent malnutrition and improve the quality of life of cancer patients.

AIM OF THE STUDY: Dietary obesity is usually characterized by leptin resistance and abnormal lipid metabolism. Lithocarpus polystachyus Rehd.(Sweet Tea) leaf is a kind of Chinese folkloric medicine, and it has been widely used for obesity, diabetes, and hypertension in South China. The present study is aimed at investigating the pharmacological mechanism of the anti-hyperleptinaemia effects of Sweet Tea leaves extract in high fat diet-induced obese rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We induced high fat diet obesity for 14 weeks to test the corrective effects of three ST doses (75, 150 and 300 mg/kg per day) for 8 weeks. At the end of the experiment, body weight, fasting blood glucose and serum lipids, superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA), fasting serum insulin and leptin, C-reactive protein, adiponectin and resistin levels were measured, Homeostasis Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR) was also calculated. mRNA gene expression of PPARγ (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ) and C/EBPα(CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein α) in epididymal adipose tissue of DIO control and experimental groups were evaluated. RESULTS: Sweet Tea leaves extract could significantly decrease the levels of serum lipids, attenuate body weight gain and lower circulating leptin and insulin levels, ameliorate the state of oxidative stress, raise serum adiponectin, reduce circulating CRP and resistin levels, and depress the expression of PPARγ and C/EBPα in epididymal adipose tissue of obese rats. CONCLUSION: The present findings suggest that ST can effectively attenuate the leptin resistance at least through anti-hyperlipidemic activity and thus has the therapeutic potential in treating hyperlipidemia and hyperleptinaemia related to dietary obesity.

By using the second-time developed ArcEngine component at pixel level, this paper studied the spatiotemporal dynamics of vegetation cover in the Dapeng Peninsula of Shenzhen, China in 1986-2007, and analyzed the characters and causes of the dynamics. To quantify this dynamics, the NDVI changes in 1986-2007 were extracted from 10 time-series TM/ETM+ remote sensing images, and the results showed that from 1986 to 2007, there were four trajectories of vegetation cover change in the Peninsula, including stable (a), stable-rising-stable (aba), stable-descending-stable (aca), and stable-descending-stable-rising-stable (acaba). The area with these four types occupied 71.54% of the total. Among the four types, type "a" was most common, occupying 1/3 of the study area, mainly in the mountains; and type "acaba" was the typical one, which was closely related to the deforestation and reforestation after the human disturbances of original vegetation. The areas at higher elevation or steeper slopes exhibited smaller vegetation change, mainly because of the constrained human disturbances. Timing of the vegetation cover change showed a relative stability in the mid-90s of 20th century, but a dramatic change after 2003, coinciding with the growth of Shenzhen City.
